The College of Physicians' Report on Yellow Fever

Philadelphia was home to 80 physicians, but only 16 gathered that stormy Sunday. The doctors formed two camps: one argued the fever had a local cause, the foul air in Philadelphia. Another camp believed refugees from Sondamong had brought the disease from the West Indies. Despite these measures, people continued to get sick and die every day. Mayor Clarkson even ordered church bells to stop tolling for the dead.
