James Reyes met Sherry Papini through a youth group as a teenager. The two were together for several years and lived in Costa Mesa, but the relationship eventually crumbled. They hadn't seen one another since around mid-2006. He was cleaning out his house in 2015 when he came across some of Sherry's old belongings. Not long after that, Sherry contacted him out of the blue to say she needed his help. She said her husband had been beating and raping her, and she didn't know what to do.
