The crew of the Essex traded 30 starving hogs that were almost skeletons for half a barrel of beans. They continued on their journey towards South America, one boat down. But then halfway between Rio de Janeiro and Buenos Aires, three months into the journey, the crew heard a cry from the lookout for the first time. Now each whale boat competed to see who could reach the whale first but they also had to make sure not scare away by making noise.
