The aristocrats believed they were the only ones who could properly administer the rights and serve as intercessors with the gods. The land in which your ancestors had been buried belonged not to any individual, but to a lineage that was divinely protected. So the expropriation of property to these aristocrats was a sort of horror That transcends the material interest and enters into the realm of a religious sacrilege of the most existential variety. They don't have responsibilities that go beyond their own lifespan. And so the state is managed in this short-sighted manner.
