Paul writes in to say he loves the rock outcropping on Claremont Canyon. It's called ribbon shirt because it's arranged in thin layers just a few inches thick. And so they look like ribbons when they're exposed, as Paul says. The formation is actually the major source of petroleum for California's oil fields due to how it formed.
