In the 19 nineties, a documentary called paris is burning was made about black and latinex ball culture in new york city. The film shows how drag performances can reinforce the dominant norm by reiterating it as the very desire of the subjects who are performing it. But i think there's an inherent ambiguity or danger in these performances because what you're doing is either reinforcing existing social norms about what women look like, or what women are or men. Andso we see here that performativity itself is neither necessarily conservative nor necessarily disrupt ive, but has this ambilence attached to it, ye.
