Demetrius took the bait and positioned his soldiers near the harbor to defend against what he thought was a rather pathetically small invasion force. His delight soon turned to dread, as the rest of the Roman army made its appearance over the nearby hill, and charged the Illyrians. The prospect of a two-front battle was too much, and the RDI broke rank and fled. Demetrius managed to flee from the city on a boat that he kept in reserve, leaving it in the hands of Rome. Paulus then allowed his legionaries to plunder Faros and burn it to the ground.
