When Rudolph was 21 in 1882, a Germanist scholar named Karl Schroer had tasked him with helping to publish Girtha's works on natural history. Steiner was notably an anti-nationalist, but is also widely considered to be one of the founding minds behind the idea of Germanness. He started churning out articles for the Austrian Pan-German press and essentially tried to push the idea that Austria ought to be part of this new Germany thing.
