Learning Scales Is a Core Part of Self-Directed Learning

The idea of linear curriculums don't make sense to me anymore as a teacher. I think you absolutely can play music without learning scales. And if you hit a roadblock, use that as a signal to go back and learn the basics. It's not necessarily going to be the order in which you get interested in maths.
