The Politics of Sexual Libel in France

Sex is used largely to discredit women who aren't supposed to be having sex, except for really the production of heirs. Would sexual libel have been such a big deal for people who weren't of the nobility? It's going to be interesting to understand why it is that sex is still interesting because none of that matters anymore.
