The Messianic Banquet

In the old testament, we have a festive meal as the primary social institution for celebrating victory and deliverance. The messianic banquet has its apparent roots in another pattern, found in certain ancient near eastern creation myths. It's actually something that you can find elsewhere in the ancient near east in certain respects. In one of the favorite images of the parables, the kingdom is compared to a great banquet.
