George Washington Buck was promoted to sergeant after the battle of Gettysburg. A letter from a fellow soldier tells how he nearly killed him twice in that fight. The officer says, "I started to pull the trigger, but some queer notion stopped me" He adds: "How close an escape I had had I did not know till afterwards"
