The Germans' Allies Aren't Even Entertaining Their Own Wishful Thinking About the Situation
The Allies were nervous about the Italians. They become more nervous because it then becomes very, very clear at a very early stage of the negotiations that there are factions within the Italian high command. And so they don't trust them. So what happens is the allies go, OK, well what are you going to do? We're going to force you to sign in the surrender which they finally do on the 4th of September. In 1943 we are going to launch an invasion but we're not going to tell you how where it's going to be, when it’s going to be,. You just need to respond to it.
