Fred was physically affectionate with Rose to the point of making Caroline uncomfortable, but he would just as easily wind her up. If she didn't do what he wanted, he called her a bad wife. He bragged about operating on women to give them more pleasure from sex. At any given time, there could be upwards of 30 people at the West's home, with a steady flow of new faces coming and going at all hours. Unconvinced, Caroline suspected abuse was taking place at Cromwell Street. She notified the authorities, but never received a response.
