Teresa of Avila's Carmelite Reform
In 1582, Teresa of Avila establishes a Carmelite convent in Alba de Tormez. The town was opposed to the idea because it meant privileged girls could only go there if their fathers gave them dowries. But she changed that and opened up her convent to underprivileged girls and women. She also taught an illiterate shepherd girl how to read and write. By this time, by the time she dies in 1582, she is considered a living saint.
