Bob Greene says achievement is the completion of a task imposed from outside. The reward often being a path to the next achievement, he writes. He argues that pursuing things we may do poorly can produce the sense of absorption which is all that happiness is while persisting in those we already do well does not. A hobbyist or retiree taking a course in yoga or batik who might be easily patronized by achievers has rocket fuel in her hands according to Greene.
