Roll plugs ensure a tight and secure fit for screws in material which is brittle. You've got to push quite hard when you're screwing into the wall, so that you don't damage the end of the screw. A rubber mallet is sometimes a better way of doing it than using a metal hammer. Pliers are things that you hold in your hand, they're designed to cut paper or fabric instead of scissors.
