The conventional wisdom is that Jefferson is a visionary genius, Madison is a deep thinker and Monroe is kind of a lightweight. How fair is that? Well, I think Monroe is easily the most successful president of the three. It's certainly the case that Monroe did not have the very well-honed intellect that the other two did. But he apparently felt the deficit and he chose John Quincy Adams and Calhoun to be his top advisors.
