CHAPTER

The Difference Between Confucianism and Taoism

Confucianism is concerned with things like filial piety, how to have towards your family. It lays down fairly rigid hierarchies for how the world should operate. In contrast to confucius, taoism is very anti hierarchical and anarchic. At times it's opposed even to language and to rationality. So it is a bit of an odd philosophy. And its classic, which is the dotejing, is pretty much a piece of poetry. I think it's five thousand characters long. It rhymes often. It's quite opaque and just a really interesting piece of writing.
