What's Going On?

Both of the earth's poles were hit by heat waves this week. The arctic was 30 degrees above average for this time of year, and the antarctic was an unprecedented forty degrees above average. We're seeing more extreme temperatures everywhere on earth, but for both poles to experience such heat waves at the same time is highly unusual. What's happening is that we have a very wavy jet stream, and so that air masses that would normally be further north are moving further south.
