Techno-Populism and Democracy in Politics

Technocracy and populism have this complicated relationship to the concept of democracy. Populism as a term is this broad sort of holistic appeal to the people that sits very uneasily with the much more divided and partisan appeals of democratic party politics. For me techno-populism is the politicization of expertise. It's bringing experts and claims about expertise into politics and making them part of what electoral party competition is about. I do think you're right that we can think of these themes as being relevant for non-democracies too.
