How Do Interest Rates Go Up?

If interest rates go up, then government debt has to become less valuable. Higher interest rates are inflationary exactly in the same way as lower surpluses are inflationary. When you look at stocks, one of the great discoveries of the last 30 years is not changes in cash flow expectations but changes in expected return. That's what's going on now. Why is the stock market going down? Because people say interest rates are goin to go up. Not so much because of cash floas. So it turns out the same thing is true of of inflations.
