The term was used, a few listeners will recall from episode 11 disparagingly by identitarian Jews in the Maccabean revolt against the Solusid regime. Even more complex dialectics of cultural identity accreted to our term used in various ways by Christians who sought to exist within and or Christianize Hellenism such as Gregory of Nazianzos. We need to look very carefully at people's identity claims on the one hand, we are the pure Jews who reject all that which is Hellenic and on the other hand their actual cultural practices.
