The personal essay allows us to have a little look at something, small moments of life that illuminate the larger themes of life. I think it's the most appealing of forms. It was hard at first for me, the first few essays I wrote, but it was so freeing. And when you're writing a news story, you're under the tremendous pressure to get everything right.
