Monasteries in the History of Tibetan Buddhism

Monasteries are centres of learning across the buddhist world, not only in tibet. And so certainly there are monasteries that are very small and primarily shrines where people may make offerings. But then moving from there to places that are more populated, with monks and nuns who live and study at a monastery setting. There's a wide varit what monasteries actually do in the tibetan context. So i think they are important in the history of tibet beyond buddhism as well.
