How Do You Decide Which Metric Tool to Use?

How do you decide which tool to use and how much data you should retain as a user of a cubenated system? I think it does end up being a somewhat personal decision, especially the retention. More than a month of high resolution metrics tend to be almost useless. They start to increase the cost of your stack quite a lot while you're probably never going to have a look at it again.
