There was plenty of goofiness for these papers to cover. Most people looked at the Mormons with good humor, especially after what happened in Missouri. Once Smith got more attention, people started pulling pranks. Three men cut six copper plates and their buddies filled those plates with fanciful writing,. And then they used acid to corrode the metal to make it look old. Them, they buried the sheets near a Native American burial ground; spread the word around Nevu that one of the men had dreamed of buried treasure three nights in a row.
