Dante confronts this possessive kind of love at the early stages of his journey up Mount Purgatory in his first dream. To realize that love which is supposed to be this good thing actually is this desire to have and to hold to maybe even violently possess cling to perhaps even rape is deeply uncomfortable as a recognition within yourself.
