The Prehistory of the Civil War in the United States

The United States dodged a bullet at the end of the Gilded Age when you were absolutely in these conditions for a crisis. And yet what followed was the sort of, you know, post-crash, New Deal situation that somehow averted violence. So now we are again to generations. It's with clock clock wise that we get this periods of instability, but it's the structural conditions that determine whether we have one like today or not.
