The sermon is not simply patriotism, or an attempt to arouse the waning german spirit crushed under the heel of napoleon. The main thing is this broad distinction between those who ware alive and those who were dead. This rarly bounded spell upon the mind of a great many young germans around the late 17 seventies and early 17 eighties. For shelling, god was roughly a kind of self developing principle of consciousness. He saw the world as something which begins in a state of brute unconsciousness and gradually comes to consciousness of itself.
