Is This Really a Good Explanation of the Origins of Crying?
Some people have used the aquatic ape hypothesis a a to explain the origins of emotional tears. The idea is that humans evolved because our ancestors were semi-aquatic and spent a lot of time in the water, maybe fishing around for mollusks or swimming. It's hard to see how tears here would have any additional survival value. Plus, there's no direct evidence for such an evolutionary theory.
