The Death of the Tomahkachi
When Bandai launched the toy outside of Japan, they toned down the whole dying thing. The Tomahkachi's life cycle ends when it sprouts its wings and returns to its home planet millions of miles away. It can then be reset to hatch a new creature, but the one that has sprouted wings is gone forever. Kids were so attached to these virtual pets that when they died or went to cyberspace, it could be quite traumatic. A pet cemetery in the Cornish countryside of southern England offered them a solution.
