Alternative assets are everything else that could go up in value. Baseball cards, crypto and nfts all fall into this category. They might appreciate at a pace which is greater than the other assets you have. There are different reasons why you might invest in them. You might get passion and joy from owning that corvet or first comic book of x man. Another reason might be that they are correlated differently with public market assets  or other assets in your portfolio.
