The Importance of Distance and Time in Morality
Peter McCaskill: Morality is about treating others' interests as we do our own. He argues that if distance and space from the self is not morally relevant, why should distance and time be any different? The moral concerns of near-termists seem too sentimentally connected to the selfish present, he says. In his view, a morality concerned with maximizing the total amount of happiness doesn't only aim to make people happy, it aims to make happy people.
