The aim of Augustine's revisionist history is to demonstrate that pagan religion was not only a quagmire of misguided superstition. In books 11 through 22 of the city of God, he essentially sets out to answer many questions left unanswered by the Bible. "In philosophical history there is a term called system building," says Julian Zelizer.
