With the civil rights movement, you had a movement that was focused on one identity group. But then people who were wrapped up in these movements became very self reverential and ah iffor them an identity was not something that bound people together but rather, it became a kind of way of reflecting on difference. A lot of social movements broke apart on the basis of identity. Resent mens. And soe people ont left really abandon electoral politics to develop this idea that all social change happens through social movements that are tied to identity. You end up now with maybe three generations of young people, liberal elites, who've been brought up in the university to think about politics in terms of group
