The book is based on interviews conducted by the federal government with formerly enslaved people who were still living in the 1930s and 1940s. The interviewers often received rich responses to those questions, answers to those questions that they hadn't anticipated. And one of the things that enslaved people always talked about are the women in their lives - slave owning women.
