The Need for Theory in Statistic Investigations

In terms of the need for theory as opposed to raw data I think the point I'm making in the example from medicine do show that you definitely need theory. Even with statistical investigations the only ones that have really been successful are the ones that are based on theorizing. So if you like you can establish causality with from correlation by considering alternative explanations and then testing them and refuting them. This is a part of the process where I say I think that the boparian ideas come in quite nicely.
