In Africa and Asia, especially, canine rabies is still a big problem. There are definitely tens of thousands of deaths that are occurring there due to dogs that are infected with rabies. The World Health Organization stance and the CDC stance is that with proper vaccination and post-exposure prophylaxis, this is a preventable disease. And so... Wait and see will kill you if you are infected.
