Justinian and the Slavic Peoples

Justinian had different priorities to those of his Germanic conquerors. He ignored defences closer to home, both in the Balkans and in the east. And shortly after Justinian's death, you know, made your breakthroughs of tribes of Slavs who just settled on Roman territory because there were no troops available to turf them out or help them integrate legally into Roman structures. A hundred years after Justinian was gone, the Balkans was essentially run by the Slavic tribes. They remain there to this day.
