China's one child policy led to sex-selective abortions and female infanticide. This created a huge gender ratio and balance in the country. Last year there were 35 million more men than women, but that number plays out very differently depending on whether you live on a farm in the countryside or if you're living in a big city like Shanghai or Beijing. Chinese culture goes back centuries in its preference for boys; first-born sons are expected to carry on the family line.
