Jane Austen's Ending Escalation
Jane Austen raises the stakes by having Lydia run away- Right. Someone that he hates. Which then makes it impossible for her to marry him. She introduces something that is both personal because it's Lizzie's sister. And also creates a direct conflict. So even if she rescues her sister, can they rescue her? Yes but she is now aligned herself with someone that will make Mr. Darcy's find Jane's whole family repugnant. The final escalation for me in that book is the, you know, it gets very personal between her and him.
