The Cabinet Matters More Than the Presidents Do
The idea was that cabinet members would vote on decisions, and the president would go with the majority of the cabinet. Lincoln managed to cultivate very good, very respectful relationships with most of his secretaries even people who were no really initially set out to oppose him. He built on washington's precedent by doing the same thing. And he saw the cabinet as an opportunity in the same way that washington did,. by making sure that there was diversity included in that position.
