How Do We Read More Complex Literature Outside of the Bible?

The books of the Bible are talking to each other, just like all the other books are. I've known of churches that would very methodically do their Bible classes. We're reading maybe a verse a day, or maybe just one book out of the Bible and we're repeating that. What is God trying to tell us with this book about dragons and locus with long women's hair? How are we supposed to handle these complicated ideas? And if we, as I read more complicated literature outside of the Bible, when I come back to the Bible, it's often easier than some of the things that I've been trying to read out there.
