The Origins of Christianity in Western Europe
In the culture which was essentially a warrior culture, what you actually see is Christ portrayed as a victorious warrior king pretty consistently. These ideas are really central to Christianity particularly in Western Europe for about the first thousand years of Christianity. It begins to change because of two things. One of them Anselm in an era in which education really fell into decline, it starts being revived in law schools. And then Anselm comes along and he starts reformulating the doctrine of atonement in legal categories. The other key person is Bernard Eclairvaux but that would get us little bit too far I feel I'm afraid.
