Do You Have to Achieve Background Knowledge?
The idea that you have to acquire a certain threshold of background knowledge about any situation before you can apply your prior learning to it is something that I'm skeptical of. Ron Stuahonton and also the author of range, and David Epstein says that actually, if it's a field that very rarely changes or that very slowly changes, yes, 10,000 hours in the practice and the mastery makes a lot of sense. But pretty much for everything else, it's economic, if not beneficial,. It's efficient, I should say, to think about concepts and how your prior knowledge applies to this new situation.
