The Secret of Smallpox
The book is based on the work of William Farr, a pioneering epidemeologist in the 18 fifties. He was able to make pretty good inferences without understanding the underlying mechanism at all. The cattle plague ravaging europe called rinder pest - which ihad never heard of - turned out to be measles first.
