So even though he was in jail and strictly forbidden from using the internet, meaning he had no way of keeping in contact with Sylvie, he was committed to his belief that she was in fact his girlfriend. In a handwritten letter to the girlfriend of his cellmate, Grant explained that he and his cellmate had bonded over their shared interests and work histories. He said to the woman, I know the pain of being separated from the woman you love. And literally, you won't close.
