The Ottoman Empire

Over time, the ottomans cand of become the original other for europeans. It's a religiously distinct empire on the edge of europe but depending on the period your als right in the centre. Of course, the the elite of the ottoman empire were all moslem. But within it, you had orthodox ans, other eastern christians, jews and others who were very much part of the system with their own self governing institutions.
