It's so interesting to think like, is it a marker of intelligence or is it just like a natural thing that happens that one naturally is more used? I've never thought about this in this context. A 2020 study in Asian elephants found it was pretty evenly split between right trunkers and left trunkers. So it actually varies between species, which is really interesting. And something else I also thought was quite interesting, if they did have a trunk preference, sometimes there would also be a forefoot preference as well.
